I went to Wikipedia to look up the Gunpowder Plot and found this:

The word 'guy' came thus in the 19th century to mean a weirdly dressed person, and hence in the 20th century in the U.S. to mean, in slang usage, any male person.


The real Gunpowder Plot was supposed to destroy the government in the explosion. V destroyed the government before it, then blew up its symbol
